Indian MVAS market is expected to generate INR 5,400 crore in 2010

Company Press Release

January 2011

The wireless subscriber base in India is expected to grow to one billion by 2014. Though this base is growing at a rapid rate, mobile service operators are facing the problem of falling Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) leading them to seek for alternate revenue streams to drive future growth. The search has halted with the discovery of mobile value added service (MVAS) and mobile commerce (m-Commerce).

IndiQuest Research conducted a study which reveals that MVAS and m-commerce in India could emerge as lucrative sectors due to factors such as increasing mobile subscriber base, higher disposable incomes, technological innovation, innovative service offerings and consumer preference. Today, consumers are seeking more than just basic services (voice services) from their service operators. The telecom companies, on their part, are attempting to develop offerings aimed at retaining existing customers as well as attracting new patrons. According to a Gartner Research, the Indian MVAS segment is expected to be worth USD 5.6 billion by 2011.

Mobile commerce is still at a very nascent stage in India compared to its Asian counterparts like Japan & China and Europe and the US. With increasing disposable income in India and a higher estimated GDP growth rate at over 7 percent in the next few years, m-mobile commerce is set to take off in a big way. Mobile payments, mobile banking and mobile money transfer are the some of the key components of m- Commerce in India. The country has yet to unlock the huge potential in these segments. To put things into perspective, India received remittances of over USD 27 billion (INR 1203 billion) during April-September 2009 only and today we are equipped with the technology to facilitate these remittances using a mobile phone. This is only a glimpse of the immense opportunity that the mobile platform holds. In addition to mobile payments, mobile ticketing, mobile banking and mobile coupons are other segments expected to grow at a robust pace. However, the industry is not bereft of challenges which stand in the way of its huge growth potential.

The Report, 'MVAS and m-Commerce in India', released by IndiQuest Research Services looks into the scope of growth potential of the Indian Telecom industry, Indian MVAS sector and Indian m-Commerce segment.
